We are getting settled into the new apartment quite nicely. Almost all of the boxes are unpacked. The kitchen is in working order (more rearranging will come in the next few weeks) and the office is fully functional. Most of the boxes left were from the storage units so they are not necessarily needed right away. The move was rather uneventful. The movers took longer than expected to get the truck packed up so we ended up missing the apartment office hours and had to stay at a hotel with the cats. They were pretty good the whole trip and have settled down now, though I think they are a little off schedule. The car is acting up more often now but we made it.
This week I am easing into things by working from home all week. My boss is on vacation and I don’t have any meetings this week so I will be happy to hang out at home as much as possible.
We went to the grocery store last night, which had a good selection of GF foods. The checkout experience was interesting. I knew we were in for it when the checker said to the couple in front of us, “I’m not a vegetable person.” While bagging our groceries, the bagger asked, “What is tofu?” The checker responded, “Nasty, if you ask me.” I don’t know about you but common sense would tell me that I shouldn’t call something nasty in front of someone that is buying it. Ted tried to interject but she seemed quite happy giving her opinion and not really answering the question. The bagger tried to be nice about it and asked a few more questions of Ted when he did finally get a word in. Strange.
When we were looking at apartments in the suburbs, I didn’t really think it would be that big of a deal, but now that I am here all I can say is we are way out in the middle of nowhere--walking distance to at least 3 of the 10000 lakes. The pollen is killing me and forcing us to have the windows shut even though it is really nice out. We are also not within walking distance of a thai restaurant. We had several within a few blocks in Chicago. But we within walking distance of both Wildfire and Biaggi’s, both have a good GF menu.
Sitting at the computer and actually working was a bit of a struggle this morning. It will get easier after a couple of days. So far it still just feels like a vacation in some place with all our stuff. The daily routine isn’t really settled yet. And with nowhere to go everyday, I am feeling a bit lost.
O. M. G. Keep it classy, supermarket cashier!
